The USS Salisbury Sound (AV-13) was launched 18 June 1944, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Miriam Johnston Price, wife of Rear Admiral John D. Price, Commander of Fleet Air Wing Two, Air Forces US Pacific Fleet. The seaplane tender was placed in commission on 26 November 1945, under the command of Captain Doyle G. Donaho, USN.
